I've also got a short length of piano wire that Paul gave me under the 3rd string, just in front of the zero fret. It's just glued down with super glue. It allows you to tune a plain .016 G string perfectly with the bar bridge. Chet's CG had some sort of mini-fret, like a banjo 5th string, under the 3rd string, for the same reason. It looks like a white dot in the photos.

I'm thinking of "committing" and having a tiny "mini-fret" installed there. Of course, just as soon as I did that, I'd want to use a wound 3rd for something. I reckon what I really need is 2 CG's, one set up for a plain 3rd, and the other for a wound 3rd...
