Frets

Chuck, I've never measured, but it feels about like all the other NC/CG's I've played. They're jumbo frets, pretty high. I just left them stock, except Sonny Thomas fixed a high fret for me. They're taller than standard Gretsch frets. The CGP has big frets, too.

I've also got a short length of piano wire that Paul gave me under the 3rd string, just in front of the zero fret. It's just glued down with super glue. It allows you to tune a plain .016 G string perfectly with the bar bridge. Chet's CG had some sort of mini-fret, like a banjo 5th string, under the 3rd string, for the same reason. It looks like a white dot in the photos.

I'm thinking of "committing" and having a tiny "mini-fret" installed there. Of course, just as soon as I did that, I'd want to use a wound 3rd for something. I reckon what I really need is 2 CG's, one set up for a plain 3rd, and the other for a wound 3rd...

Forgot to mention, I had the zero fret taken down to the same size/height as the other frets. A lot of times, the zero fret on a new Gretsch is just a little too high for me. I like the action at the open position as low as if you were using a capo, but a higher action at the bridge.

Thanks for the info Craig. That mini fret is interesting.
I've had some Nashville Classics and a CGP, but I guess I never really paid much attention to how tall the frets were. I'm still awaiting my new HOF 59 CG. I ordered a "Moseley Special" Tru-Arc bridge for it about a month and a half ago. The bridge will be here before the guitar will. Hopefully the HOF CG will be here by the end of next month at the latest!

Chuck; what type of bridge did you get? Brass or what? I've got a HOF coming also. First of Year.

I ordered what Tim Harman calls a "Moseley Special" (BR-120 with 2-5/32 string spacing) It's a custom order idea that Gayle Moseley came up with. It's a brass Tru-Arc bridge with a very slightly wider string spacing at the bridge. It's only 3/32" wider than the standard spacing, but Gayle said "a tiny bit goes a long way in the feel of the instrument". It sounded like a great idea to me so I ordered one.

The latest info that I have on my HOF CG order:

" The next batch of HOF Gents are scheduled to arrive early January, 2012."

Also from what I understand, they go to the Gretsch warehouse in Arizona first for inspection. Then they are shipped out to the music stores. Of course I mail ordered mine, so next it has to be shipped to me. Might be looking for it as late as February! I hope it arrives sooner. It's been a long wait, but from all I hear it will be worth the wait!

Wow those HOF Gents are beautiful. I love orange Gretsch guitars. I'm also waiting on a 6122-1959 but a regular one. Supposedly arrived at the dealer yesterday. I'm really hoping it's here by Christmas.
But this threads got me thinking, if I really love that 6122-1959 I may have to replace my 6120 with a HOF!

Norm, those "inspections" always worry me. I special ordered a Martin in sunburst once and the music store had to"inspect" it before I got it. Well, they dropped the case lid on the top of the guitar when they were putting it back in the case. One of the case latches on the lid put a really big ding on the guitar. They touched it up and gave me an apology along with a big discount, but I was still disappointed. Thanks for the inspection offer anyway Norm.

I love orange Gretsch guitars too. When I saw the photos of the HOF model I decided to sell my G6120-CGP and order one. The HOF model is the same guitar that you are getting except for the orange finish, Hall of Fame nameplate and the faux f-holes are trimmed in white.
