Anyone Use a Roland AC-60?

Postby alexjones » Fri Dec 02, 2011 3:45 am

Anyone out there use a Roland AC-60 acoustic amp? I just picked one up at my local music shop for 425 out the door new. I also have an AER compact 60 and I have to say that this AC-60 beats it. After comparing it's easy to tell that the compact 60 sounds smaller and more confined (some describe as boxy). I am not saying the AER sounds bad - but I think the AC-60 is warmer, more natural and bigger (and a lot cheaper!). You can also get a lot more variation in tones. It also sounds pretty decent with my Gretsch. Not like a tube amp, but nice in its own way. I am always looking for a small portable amp that can do a majority of guitars decently. For the price - can't beat it. Anyone use one or have thoughts about it? I should mention, I'm still in the honeymoon period :) Just thought you guys might be interested.

Hello Alex-
The Roland AC-60 is my 'go-to' acoustic amp. I agree with everything you posted about it - lightweight with very good sound (and quality effects built-in). I've tried nearly all the others (including the AER), and I've kept this AC-60 so far...You're right, it cannot compete with the tone of a good tube amp, but compared to others in its price range and specs, it's excellent.
You made a good choice, and once your honeymoon is over perhaps you'll have some time to spend with it... ;)
Good luck,
Bill

Howdy Bill,
Wondering have you ever used the amp with a powered subwoofer. I just tried it tonight and am pretty impressed. It really does reinforce the bottom end (obvious), but it's pretty useful. You have to get the volume and crossover right or it won't sound natural. Looks like not a lot of guys are using this amp - for the price - they are missing out! Take care.

No, I haven't but it would improve the bottom end for sure. There's only so much you can get from two 6.5-inch speakers.

I'm not a professional player, so I take seriously the opinions and endorsements of those who do play for a living. I first learned of the AC-60 from seeing Gonzalo Bergara (John Jorgenson's rhythm player) use one in performance. I spoke with him about it, and after purchasing one myself became convinced. Roland has been around for years and makes great products.
Thanks, Bill
