Re: Chet- Rainbow
That recording is from the Merlefest, The Merle Watson Festival, 1992, as presented on the Vestapol video Chet Atkins - Rare Performances 1976-1995. It´s interesting to compare the sound of his Gibson guitar with his old favourite, the ´59 CG. In Chet´s hands it sounds good enough, but the old CG has a superior sound I think.

You may also want to get this with Chet at his best in the mid fifties:

They are a "must" for all Chet fans.

I was thinking the same thing about the Gibson Vidar... It was very likely the sound setup, but the high notes in the melody were very "gritty".. if that's a description word, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
Thanks for posting that Len.

Re: Chet- Rainbow
I always marvelled at how many times Chet was able to go through the melody different ways. Is it a Chet Atkins composition?

Gibson CGs were good guitars. The first heavy ones were the best.
Gretsch always did have better pickups but in the 50s Gretsches were not made as well
as Gibson. Gretsch guitars now are a better made guitar and if you get TV Jones pickups
you have the best.

Re: Chet- Rainbow
this video came from a dvd of chet that covered many years of his playing . there are 2 dvds , one going back to the beginning years and the other picking up where the first left off. the dvds are great .
the sad part is i didnt know chet was going to be there at that show and could have went and meet him . the show took place at the merle fest in north caroline in wilkesboro, about a 30 min drive from where i live.

Eddie I thought the first Gibson Country Gents were the worsts. I had one of the first ones, a custom shop edition, but I never liked it. It was too heavy. Later when they changed it all around and improved upon it. I got rid of that first one later and got a Orange one which I still have, great guitar! Al
