Gary Atkins R.I.P.

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you all know that Gary Atkins passed away on Christmas Day 2012. Gary was the son of Jimmy Atkins, and therefore the nephew of Chet. I was put in touch with Gary in April 2011, when a Chetboarder spotted my posting requesting information about Chet's friend, Johny Smith. I subsequently spoke to Gary many times by telephone, email and Skype, and in May 2012 I spent a lovely few hours with him at his home in Colorado. Gary was priceless in helping me with my research for Johnny's biography. The two of them (Gary and Johnny) were very close friends for around 60 years. It wasn't only Gary's 'inside knowledge', or his enthusiasm for helping me that I treasure. He quickly became was a very dear friend, and we shared many laughs. My life is richer for having known him, and sadder for hearing of his passing.

Chet introduced me to Gary (and Gary's Dad Jim), at a music store in Denver many years ago. While I didn't know him personally, I recall that he was quite friendly and courteous.

I am sorry to learn of his passing.

That is sad news about the passing of Gary Atkins. I had a few email exchanges with Gary, but was in his presence only once at CAAS when he accompanied Chet on a visit to the Gibson / Kirk Sand Room during the convention. His cousin Jimmy Atkins had told me of visiting Gary in Colorado and the two of them visiting with Johnny Smith at his home.

I look forward to your published research on guitar great Johnny Smith.
