Amazing player!

Postby Hendrik » Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:58 pm

A while ago I discovered an amazing player on YouTube. His name is Mark Garrison and boy... he plays the Chet and Jerry stuff spot on. He figured out "Grab Bag", I really thought that was impossible. After two years he uploaded two new songs yesterday. It looks like all the videos were taped a while ago, but who cares :).

I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do!

He can really figure tunes out, that's for sure! He played a Chet style "I'll see you in my dreams", so I also listened a video recording of Merle Travis playing it and realized that while I learned the tune a long time ago off of his 'Strictly Guitar' album which I love, I played it in Chet's "boom chic" style. I can't do anything else but that since it's so ingrained in me. Merle's basic style, at least in that great aforementioned album always sounded to me like "boom wink". I realize that I am trivializing two great guitarists who and especially in Chet Atkins case are far more that that basic sound.

That is really good. How come we never hear anything about him?

Mark Garrison truly is an amazing player and a great friend! We used to pick together many years ago when I lived in WV. He had an amazing ear and could listen to and figure out just about any tune from the record (We didn’t have the Internet and the availability of all the tabs back then so we had to learn the music the hard way). He was a huge inspiration to me back in those early days of playing. I consider him one of the best fingerstyle players around.

Mark is a really great player! I have a VHS tape of him from some years back, (I don't even remember where, when, or how I got it) and he has even improved since then! I'd like to hear him play some of his own renditions/arrangements however, rather than other people's...because anybody who can play "note for note" tunes recorded by Chet, Merle, or Jerry like he does, has got a lot going for him!

I must have had one too many when I posted earlier. As I've re-read it, I should have said that this guy is a great guitarist who I would go out to see any time he's performing in my southern california area. I'm sorry that I shorted him on that.

sincerely,

I remember his name from years (YEARS) ago at CAAS. I even have cassette tapes of his playing somewhere in my collection. He is truly a great player. Never met him, and I don't know if he's ever been to CAAS, but he should be!
Glad to know that he is still out there playing. Thanks for posting that, Hendrik. Bill
