Chet Atkins - 8 Classic Albums Vol. 2 CD-box

That is what made the Bear Family sets so unique. They were everything recorded during the period covered including recordings that were never released. They released sessions from the RCA masters. I started collecting Chet records back in 1962 and bought every new one that came out. At that time RCA re released all of Chet's albums starting with A Session with Chet Atkins so I was able to get the early recordings.

I was amazed when the Bear Family sets came out how much material was on them that I had never heard before. For example the Chet and Anita Kerr singers recordings that were not released or a test version of Boo Boo Stick Beat or a test version of Teensville.

A lot of discussion as been made about the two Hollywood albums. Some of the Bear Family versions of some of the recordings on Chet Atkins Workshop are different that what was on the recording I bought back in the 60's but since the Bear Family set ended in 1961 I am left hanging on that issue.

I wonder how many different companies put out albums like "the other chet atkins"? Or "Mr. Guitar". These albums are contained in so many different collections. I prefer the single releases though they are more expensive.
The "xxx...PLUS" releases are great, but hard to find (for example, "At home....plus"). There is a lot of bonus material on these versions.

I have found several of the "plus" cds on Amazon.

Can anyone explain the different recordings I hear on this box set from the "Chet Atkins' Workshop" album ?
At least 8 songs are other recordings then I recall from the original album....

That's your oppinion. But remastering is mostley very necessary, cause a lot of Chet's stuff was recorded in the 50s, and with remastering, it sound so much better. The old recordings are often very noisy.

For example, the recently released Jerry Reed CD "The incredible voice../Nashville Underground" by Sonys "Real Gone Music" label has an incredible clear sound. It can't sound better than on this CD!

On the other hand, the version of "The other Chet Atkins" which is on this "8 classic Albums" box has much more noise on it than the single CD-release. Seems to me they didn't remaster the sound of that one.

I know some people prefer the old LP's. For rock-music this seems to be better. But for acoustic guitar music like Chet's, remastering is very useful and the music much more enjoyable! Just my two cents....

Bottom line I'm just glad we have them at all. Even the older recordings can't hide Chet's genius as player and arranger
