Yes, Scotty is in a class that's hard to duplicate. Playing a song like he does is like trying to play Brent Mason's "Hotwire" or Buster Jones' "Wild Turkey" or Tommy Jones' version of "Orange Blossom Special". You might capture the essence of it but it tends to fall way short, for anyone I've ever heard try. The scales that Scotty plays around his chords are pretty tricky and I'm not sure how he thinks while he's playing them?
I caught him at CAAS back in the mid 90's and I remember him playing his version of "Caravan" while Jim Nichols accompanied him. I then attended one of his side-room sessions and he tried to explain his right hand picking technique where he grabs 2 strings at a time with a combination of his flat pick on one and his fingernail on the other one. He played a lick this way really slowly and then sped it up up to "normal" and I could see that it would be too much to put time into with everything else I'm working on.
I don't know whatever happened politically with Scotty's attendance at CAAS, but my understanding is that something went wrong. People are missing a lot by not having him there.

I'm also in awe everytime I hear him. He seems to arrive at his "chops" through many different approaches, and as Rande said, it would be very difficult to even try to duplicate his overall style. One time, he will play those blazing scales w/thumb and three fingers, next time it will be thumb and two fingers, THEN he will use the thumbpick like a straight pick, OR go with thumb and first finger....on and on! He was always one of my favorites at CAAS, man he can make it talk! Although there are many "greats" out there, nobody plays the guitar and sounds like Scotty, he's definitely got "his own thing"!

Yeah, it's a musical and 'guitarical' tragedy that he doesn't come to CAAS more often.. He fill's a gap in certain types of playing that is rarely filled at CAAS.
I think I'm going to start a Facebook campaign to get him more known outside the guitar circles!

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this but I'll ask anyway. Has he not been to the CASS Convention in a while because he doesn't want to play there or because he hasn't been invited?

Scotty is an absolute genius of the style he plays. His mind is so quick and he is such a special player. I am posting a link that also includes info about Tommy Emmanuel. I know it was done several years back but alot here may not know about it. After you read about Scotty click on the picture of him and a quicktime video will download. Be patient it takes a minute or so to get there. I was sitting right there when the footage was shot. Scotty is really something to witness. An extremely gifted player!
Thanks,
