Seems like overnight record companies started listing which musicians were playing on individual cuts on the album notes. It was so sudden and so widespread it's almost like it was the result of a legal ruling.

Anybody know or remember when that came about?

Good question Norm. The first Chet Album that I remember having all the musicians listed on it was "A Session with Chet Atkins" and that was recorded September 1954. My memory is a bit vague before that!

That one doesn't count.

That was the way that liner was written to hook off the title "session" It just seems to me that for a good long time now the participants are almost formally listed in print on the print media included in an album

Around the early '70s. As far as Atkins and Reed albums, "Ko-Ko Joe" (1971) and "Superpickers" (1973) were the first that I'm aware of. I think the first Chet/Boston Pops LP (mid-'60s) also listed the players Chet brought from Nashville, but as you say, that doesn't count.

I also love early '70's pop/rock, especially the "folky" singer/songwriter/guitarists like Jim Croce, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, etc. Those LPs usually listed the session players, engineer, producer, recording studio, and mastering house.

Now, credits include everything from endorsements to catering.
