Makes sense that the denser wood would impart a different tone than foam padding.

"Better" is a matter of opinion. "Preferred" is more descriptive.

I haven't seen my second reply, so please excuse me if I post the same one twice.

To me the wood shims had a crisper and cleaner tone than the rubber shims. I have considered adding rubber shims on the bridge pickup, so I could get the recommended 5/32" clearance, but I haven't done it yet. I play mainly on the neck pickup with the bridge pickup volume adjusted as desired, so I felt the neck pickup adjustment was more improtant as long as the bridge pickup adjustment was close.

Years ago when we didn't have Internet access, I'll bet that if Paul had compiled everything in his ChetBoard FAQ (available to all of us) into a small book and published it, it would have sold like crazy to his fans. I feel very fortunate to have access to so much "inside" information!

my archive is roughly 70 pages long. This is the archive that the FAQ information was build on and, trust me, the FAQ only scratch the surface. Paul posted a lotof comments over the years and I have most of them edited into a searchable document. This is how and why I can be so quick with Paul quotes.

I'm in the process of trying to write a bio of Paul that will incorporate my archive so the information will be available to all. I would apprecaiate people sharing any Paul stories they might want to have included in the final work.
