As a junior at DePaul University, I was taking Mandolin lessons from Jethro Burns [from the comedy/music duo Homer & Jethro] at The Guitar Works in Evanston. I played for him a tune I was working out on the guitar called "Nola." Upon hearing it, Jethro said, "You'll have to play that for my brother-in-law when he comes to town." So with that, I was given the opportunity to meet Chet Atkins, when he came to play at Orchestra Hall. I was surprised at how easy going and comfortable he was. He had such a supportive and casual demeaner that it put me completely at ease. A couple of weeks later I recieved a tape in the mail of some tunes Chet recorded for me to learn. Wonderful pieces like Mr Bojangles, Vincent, Hi Lili... many that I put on my first CD.
