I've always been led to believe that they were argyle, but now I'm wondering if I'm wrong about that as well. However, it would certainly explain my inability to sound exactly like Chet.

I have to derail just a little bit here.

It wasn't Ray's opinions on action height that bothered me. Opinions on action is relative to the individual's feelings on the matter.
What bothered me (and many others) was his condecending opening line "...I just want to put to bed the story going around about Chet's action is high..."
It wasn't a "story going around". It was a series of direct observations made and posted here over the years by Chet's longtime sideman and very close friend Paul Yandell. Ray's statement implying that Chet always recorded direct also flies in the face of Paul's postings about Chet's recording methods combining mics and amps over the years, also posted here.
Is it really that important? Yes and No.
No, because, again, action and recording methods are fluid and changing and changable things.
Yes, it is important, however, for serious students of Things Chet, not all of whom are guitarists. The way he did things with what his times and tools had to offer are worthy of study and accuracy IS important.

Well; I want to thank all of you for adding all your suggestions about this guitar.
I must tell you that I DID travel about 300 miles just to play on one and it didn't take me
but about 5 minutes to decide that this IS a very good fingering guitar. It is beautiful and
I went ahead and ordered one to come in in Dec or Jan. It was a Broadway Sound in Knoxville.
I know they may have wondered why I didn't play it longer but it didn't take long to know that
this was the one for me.....By the way; they only have one left that they will get in to sell in Jan.
