Modern Day Jerry Reed Classical?

wow! I like that 99cent one. I just got a raise at work so I may be throwing all kinds cash at that auction.
What do you guys think would be too much on that?

I would definitely aim for a Harmony guitar. I don't think it matters if it's a H-172, H-173, H-174 or a H-177. You could also look for a Gibson C1 or a Guild Mark III. Jerry played these guitars too and you can find them all the time on eBay. Especially the Gibson's are pretty common for being old-timers. It's in a higher price range though, $250 > $500.

But a Harmony would be the cheapest option, if you leave the Prismatone II out of it. I wouldn't pay more then $100 for a H-173 in excellent condition. This model appears almost every week on eBay. A H-174 is a rare bird and you won't find them often. If you do find one, you probably pay around $200 > $300. But just look at AngusH' his Clawdia, isn't that amazing?

The el crappo comment worries me some. I've played new made in Japan Stratocasters that are more playable than mid 60s Silvertone electrics. Atleast some el crappo stuff is easier to play these days. I'm wondering if once I do get a Harmony it will feel like a step down from my "el crappo" chinese Manuel Rodriguez.

Some thoughts regarding modern day Jerry Reed Classicals.

So after spending the past few weeks hunting for somthing here's what I found.
There's a trend in the pacific rim built classicals. Manuel Rodriguez, Yamaha, Cordoba, etc. They are all designed to be played "classical" style. There are no modern day Jerry Reed style guitars. The Gibson C0 and C1 are no longer made and Guilds are now made in china. Martin doesn't even make anything like the N20.

Jerry supposedly liked his action super low. I can't justify spending more than $500 on a guitar in which I'm going to lower the action to rob it of it's inherent tonal qualities.

I ended up buying a Cordoba C7 - the neck was too skinny and actually started to cause pain. Returned.

I next got a Guild GAD C1 and hoped it would be like Jerry's old Guild. The build quality was REALLY poor. For a brand new guitar it had serious bridge lifting off the body. Returned.

I next purchased a Yamaha CG172FS. Nice. But the neck was again too skinny. Returned.

Stopped at a GC yesterday and found a scratch and dent model Manuel Rodriguez C3. It had the biggest chunky profile out of any new classical I've played. Bought it, sanded the saddle way down, it sounds like poo now, but is playable and I can finally start working on Jerry stuff. Hunt over I hope.

Not totally true...Just like most of the cheaper guitars FMC offers, Guild has an Asia produced "economy" line.

The decent ones are made in the same factory where most of the Ovations were made at one time, in Connecticut...In fact, probably the majority of Ovations are now Asian made, so that those craftsmen can produce Guilds.

A 70's USA guitar that cost 800 new has turned into a 800.00 Asian made guitar with an American name.

you guys sure did hike the price up awful quick on that h173 on ebay. Makes me regret not jumping on the one before at $75 at the end of the auction.

Actually some Harmony guitars were actually made better than some think.

The one I have has a solid top and sides. They usually need a setup and new tuners but the
one I have has a very deep sound and I am in the process of getting it re fretted.

Is it a Gibson? No. But for a cheap nylon string guitar it is not bad.
Mine is from the 60s I am guessing.
