Or
Production run 1981-82. The first 1,000 of these instruments were serialized with a letter + 3 digits: i.e. A 001 – A 100, B 001 – B 100, C 001 – C 100, etc., through K 100

or

I have yet to have anyone confirm this on the 82/83 alpha/numerics, but
They were serialized in the electronics cavity- you'll see it on the rim when you take off the cover.

Hi,

I have a Gibson Chet Atkins CE Custom Shop serial # A002.

The instrument is in great shape I purchased it in 1987, new, it was built in 1982.

Does anyone can help me with the value of this guitar.

Thanks,

Jay's post above describes how most Gibson serial numbers can be deciphered, but the year of manufacture of the original Custom Shop CE/CEC cannot be determined from the alpha-numeric numbers stamped on the headstock. Only about 900 instruments were made in 1982 at the Gibson Custom Shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After that, production of the CE/CEC shifted to Nashville, using the "regular" 9-digit serial number format.

I think all the Kalamazoo CE/CEC's had the serial number stamped in the rim of the electronics cavity, the Jan-June '82 production time period stated on the gold hang tag, and the alpha numeric stamp on the back of the headstock. You can see these pictured (including cavity stamp) on ebay #190682393543.

WHOOT CRIBDOG...
They were serialized in the electronics cavity- you'll see it on the rim when you take off the cover.

Man...I have posted that on this board several times, but never been able to find anyone to send me a picture to support it. I was beginning to think that I had been told wrong...although I remember seeing one with my own eyes. Finally!

Now I can resume working on the grassy knoll thing.

I didn't see that ser# until recent years... Now, if I can just find a deserving buyer... it truly is a showpiece!
Best of luck with the Grassy Knoll project!
