The Chetboard

19 years ago Chet introduced Martin Taylor to Nashville television viewers who was in town to attend the '94 CAAS convention. I was watching in my hotel room and was blown away. Later at the convention I was honored to meet both Martin and Chet.

What an intriguing arrangement of Georgia that is! And what a player to be able to put that together. It's interesting that his fingerings look pretty tight. Don't think I saw any long streches, 4 frets quite a bit, but if any were longer than that I missed them. A player has to really know the fretboard to put things together like that. Very nice to see and hear.

Seeing this guy and Lenny Breau play together would have been sensory overload.

I really enjoyed the posting. Thanks. It reminded me of a time when I was young and in the USAF up in Elmendorf AFB near Anchorage, AK. I played some of my Chet tunes for a guy and all he said was "you had to watch your hands" which made me feel bad. But I noticed in Martin Taylor's performance of "I've got rhythm", that he watched his hands. So I don't feel so bad that I still have to watch my hands especially the left hand. It's funny the old memories that can pop into your head.

Great to see that again. About 20 years ago I was lucky enough to spend a day with Martin and the great Ike Isaacs. I wish they had been around when I was fumbling my way round jazz chords back in the '60s. I think Ike had a lot to do with Martin's early development; he was certainly a mine of information. I came home floating about 6 foot off the ground!
