Great video: Jerry Reed - I Feel for You
Posted: Fri Aug 02, 2013 12:05 pmHere's a great new clip that I've never seen before; Jerry is playing I Feel for You from his album "The Unbelievable Guitar & Voice of Jerry Reed". This was on the "Country Music Holiday" tv-show hosted by Wally Fowler. This clip must be from around '66/'67.
Jerry is playing a Baldwin 800C and I think no one ever knew he played this model before. Now I've seen this clip, I'm not that sure anymore if Jerry got hooked on the Baldwin guitars after visiting NAMM. I don't know when the Baldwin 801CP got on the market, but I guess around '67. Jerry first recorded with the 801CP on "Explores Guitar Country", that album was from '69. The 800C models were sent out by the Baldwin Co. to a variety of musicians to gain exposure and popularity, for example Willie Nelson and Charlie Byrd (both removed and installed the pickup in their own guitars). So there is a gap where he played the 800C and 801CP. Perhaps he didn't liked the 800C and wasn't interested in recording with an electrical classical at that time?
I don't believe he ever recorded with this guitar. The songs on "The Unbelievable Guitar & Voice of Jerry Reed" are all acoustically on a Guild Mark III. The album that followed, "Nashville Underground", is (partly) recorded on his first electrical classical guitar, a Gibson C1-E (he performed with this guitar in '67). The albums after that, "Alabama Wild Man" and "Better Things in Life" are also all acoustically. And then, in '69, came his masterpiece "Explores Guitar Country" were he for the first time recorded with a Baldwin 801CP, what eventually became his trademark sound.
The 800C on this clip sounds a bit dull compared when he played the 801CP. Both are fitted with the Baldwin Prismatone pickup.
