James Burton and Ricky Nelson play Trambone

Not sure if this qualifies as off topic or not. Unless I'm mistaken Trambone is a Chet Atkins original.

Just happened to see this video on the side bar and thought it was worth posting.

I wonder if this was from a TV show or if they were just sitting around playing somewhere. Does anyone know?

In an interview, Burton said that he lived with the Nelson family for a long period of time while playing for Ricky and being on the TV show. He said Ozzie and Harriet treated him like family.

This looks like it was filmed in a bedroom.

Very true, until JB wanted out to pursue a solo career. From what I'd heard there was no further contact with the Nelsons after that . . .

The clip itself is too slick to just be a'two guys fooling with a camera' Probably an outtake from one of the shows.
That show ran for a loooooong time

It is true that Chet had the original recording, but the arrangement JB and Ricky were playing was more akin to the Duane Eddy version. Of course, Duane recorded it because he was and always will be a huge fan of Chet's.

I thought JB did his best work while working for Ricky. Ricky's style just seemed to suit JB to a tee. JB probably had a lot to do with developing Ricky's style. He did some great work with Elvis, but his work with Ricky was just outstanding, imo.

I love that RIC acoustic! Wonder if any of those are still around? Thanks for posting this!

There as scarse as hen's teeth. About 25-years ago I had the pleasure to play one that supposedly belonged to Rick Nelson. It played like snot on a doorknob, and whatta full tone for having a super-low action just like a Rick electric . . .
