The Chetboard

Hi Folks,
Can anybody help me decipher this 7 seconds of hell for me Just can't see what Chet's doing even though it looks easy as pie. Any help is appreciated.

He is pulling off to chord tones. Al

and he's tuned to a G chord

When he recorded it he would tune to G and capo the second fret for A just to drive people nuts

Insofar as it looking easy, remember....this is Chet Atkins! He spent a lifetime on the guitar such that he could make the impossible look extremely easy. Even so...those chord pulloffs require very good left hand strength and left to right hand coordination, so it will take some time to learn to do them as smoothly as he did especially on a classical guitar. Did I seem bold enough in stating this to make anyone think I could do it? Yeah.....that's what I thought.

Thanks all. Yep Chet has such fantastic timing and finesse. He probably just made the lick up and stuck it in. I love this arrangement as well as the earlier one on his Gretsch. If anyone works it out let me know. I'll keep listening and stabbing away at it. So what if I'm driving my wife nuts.

Fred, if I may suggest maybe you could try learning it in different phases. Whatever Chet's doing is a group of 16th notes. Maybe try learning the quarter notes first ( the 1st note of the flurry and then every 4th note after that.) When you get those down then learn the 8th notes ( every other note. ) Once you get that part down it will sound somewhat like what Chet was doing. After that comes the hard part of filling the in the missing notes and the even harder part of putting it all together like Chet did.

Hope all that made sense to you and good luck however you go about tackling those licks.I'm sure Chet makes lots of us feel like perpetual beginners!

Indeed! Chet is the "gold standard"....we all have something to aspire to.

It's a challenge to decipher the notes, hard to see what he's playing, really have to develop my ear more. I'll see if slowing down the video helps.

I learned that pull off lick a long time ago but forgot it since. I usually don't tune to G very often,you have to stay in that tuning an play a long with him and you'll get it. Al

Thanks Al...you are so right. Slowing down the vid I was finally able to figure out the dang notes, now getting up to speed will take some time and patience. Makes me realize how much talent some pickers have just picking it my ear by playing Chet's old records over and over. Well, next lifetime anyway. Thanks again.
