I rediscovered this footage on youtube tonight and enjoyed it so much. I always loved what Chet could do with the Gibson Country Gentleman. Were any of you at this show? Share your stories

I have been playing the Chet style since I was about 10 years old, maybe younger. And, I have spent all of this time trying to improve and be as good as I possibly can be, but if I live to be a million years old in perfect health I would never be able to make a guitar sound as good as Chet did. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but Chet was the ultimate guitar player. His versatility was amazing. The one thing, outside of his uncanny playing abilities, was always his imagination. Chet seemed to hear and do things on guitar that no one else ever thought of doing. The rest of us are copy cats. In my case, a poor copy, but Chet has always been my inspiration and always will be.

Paul was a perfect match for Chet. Chet could have looked for a million lifetimes and never found anyone close to Paul. They both were in sync all the time. Their minds were always on the same wave length. Paul could feel what Chet was about to do. (If I was talking to a bunch of Okies, I would say "fixin' to do.") Paul's own abilities were astounding, but he was happiest supporting Chet. I met Paul Yandell way too late in life, but knowing him has enriched my life in ways I can't explain. Not only did he help me to become a better guitar player, but I learned lessons about friendship and loyalty from him that is so uncommon nowadays. There won't be another Chet Atkins. Neither will there ever be another Paul Yandell. We have been blessed.

I was at that event and for me it was one of the best Merlefest ever. It was Chet and Paul what can I say they were wonderful. Merlefest has grown in directions that I don't agree with. In the 90's they held some great fingerstyle guitar events. Merlefest was the first place I ever saw Tommy Jones, Muriel Anderson, Guy Van Duser. Unfortunately they are not so guitarcentric these days.
