Paul Vo, inventor of the unusual Moog Guitar, transferred his concept to the acoustic guitar and showed it to Richard Smith. Not a very good recording, but you'll get the idea:

Interesting device. Still don't get Richard's "laser torch" remark, though ...

In British English, "torch" is flashlight. I believe that's what he's refering to.
He said the EBow is a "torch" or flashlight compared to this being a "laser torch" or
laser flashlight.

but in this case it's less of a language problem in my case. This metaphor seems somehow weird to me. Maybe I haven't watched enough science-fiction movies ...

I agree. It went past me too the first time I heard it. Brits sometime have a "unique" way of viewing/expressing stuff.
Americans also can get caught up in creative lingo that defies deciphering sometimes.
