Wow what a player he was at that age. I remember that well when they aired that. I had never heard Black Mt. Rag before and thought only Chet, Donnie Grace and I was using thumbpicks. I lived in a pretty small fingerstyle world until then. I think I was about 15 when this came out. Boy was he ever good. EP

Yeah, that was amazing! I sure wish I'd had the chance to see Tommy Jones in person, and that he would have stayed with us for a while longer. What a talent!

I love Chet playing this, but Tommy seems to have taken it to a new dimension. I also think that using a capo gives the tune a bit more "bite".

I remember this appearance well! Our local radio station was playing Tommy quite a bit going into the news break. The first song I heard him play was Dixie Hummingbird. My good friend Terry Efaw, who had won the contest Chet did for a couple years in Knoxville, told me about Tommy. They were pretty close and hanging out with Chet quite a bit then I believe. I finally got to meet Tommy in Nashville a few yeers later and hang out with him a few times. What a talented and humble individual. He sure had that extra 'something' that all the truly great players seem to have.
