Amanda From Barbados...John Knowles

Here's a pretty tune that's been kept under wraps for some years!
John wrote this tune but then some "legal eagles" butted in, and spoiled it for us all...what else!?
John Knowles does an admirable job of playing it...naturally!
Better late than never... 8-)

John is such a wonderful player, and teacher. He has written many "catchy" tunes,,,in my book, Amanda From Barbados is one of the best. I believe it is my personal favorite of his. Thanks John, for all you do to promote and teach fingerstyle playing.

I appreciated the harmonies and the way each part of the song was connected.

This arrangement was in his quarterly back in the '90's sometime. I had learned to play it, but have since forgotten the tune. The quarterly is really a nice booklet with a lot of tunes. I imagine he still publishes it. Really good.

Give me John Knowles c.g.p. over the World Series anyday - even if the Cardinals are playing!

If I was a moderator I would make David the Chetboard MVP, most valuable poster!

Well, thank you Bill, Whew...I'm sure glad you didn't mean "Most Valuable Player", 'cause that would sure be a misnomer where I'm concerned! I like to think I've got fairly good taste in music, but then that's a "relative" thing, isn't it? But it's kinda like the old saying, "you don't have to be a cattle expert to know a good steak when you taste one!" :)

John Knowles isn't just a "good" guitar player, he's a great guitarist (in my humble opinion.) John has some of the same qualities on the guitar that Chet had, and the most important one is that his "taste" is above reproach. That's half the battle!

Here's another fine example of this. The tune "Vincent" has not only a beautiful melody, but the lyrics are amazing and meaningful as well. I've heard many different arrangements/versions of it, but I believe John's version is the best by far. Love that moving bass line!

Enjoy...

Thanks, guys. I'm glad you are enjoying Amanda from Barbados. I've been playing it a lot recently so I'll probably include it in my CAAS set. You can find it in issue #4 of my FingerStyle Quarterly along with a version of Chet's Arkansas Traveler.

No worries David, I'll never try to make you most valuable player unless I become head coach at something - and then only of you can out perform everyone else on the board.
