Sails (Orleans)

For those of you who may not have heard the original by Orleans. This was from the same album as "Still The One", a massive hit in 1976. Both Chet and Steve Wariner recorded "Sails", and didn't have to change much- it's all there. Of course, Chet also recorded "Dance With Me", another great Orleans song, written by John and Johanna Hall.

Hope you enjoy,

Craig

Thanks for sharing, Craig!
Those other two songs are very familiar to a lot of people, but most of them can't tell you the name of the band that did them. I was playing Sails one time, and a lady said to me, "Isn't that a Chet Atkins song?" I explained to her that it also had words and was originally done by Orleans, and I also told her about Steve Wariner doing it with vocals. Turned out that she was also a fan of Steve's, but she didn't have the album with Sails. I'm guessing that she probably does now.

Indeed, "Sails", and the others you mention are very well written tunes. I have always thought that "Sails" works much better as an instrumental than a vocal tune. For me, it has that "sounds-as-if-the-lyrics-were-added-later" feel - even though it is a singable/memorable melody.

I wonder if Chet may have felt this and was attracted to the tune for this reason?

In any case, Chet sure had good taste!
