Good job, Lance. You're right- that's exactly what Chet did.
Many times we forget that Chet recorded lots of contemporary pop tunes. Just to cite a few examples:
1. Chet's hit version of Mr. Sandman was on the charts at the same time as the original vocal version.
2. Catch the Wind from More of That Guitar Country was a big hit for Donovan in 1964, only a year before.
3. The Beatles' Something from the Abbey Road album came out in the fall of 1969, and Simon and Garfunkle's Bridge Over Troubled Water was released in January 1970. Later that same year, Chet and Jerry Reed covered both tunes on Me and Jerry. (Also, McArthur Park was just a year or two old, and the Beach Boys had a hit with Sloop John B only a couple of years before that.)
4. Anne Murray's Snowbird was released in 1970, and Chet's version was released in 1971.
There are many more examples. And don't forget Solid Gold '68, Solid Gold '69, Picks on the Beatles, and Picks on the Hits- all these were albums of contemporary hits.
