New cone for my DV

Postby Spadaro Paolo » Fri Aug 06, 2021 6:11 am

In these relaxing days, I'm on vacation, I have a lot of free time.
So I decided to do something I've wanted to try for a long time, change the aluminum cone in my DV.
The new cone purchased years ago, I believe it is from the "beard".
Well the result is fantastic, more volume but above all more sustaine;
I also believe that the tuning is more stable.
I would like to try the nylon bass strings like classical guitar, what do you think?

This morning I installed the three low strings of the D'addario EJ33 Folk,
practically nylon strings but with the final ball for the attachment to the suspension bridge.
I thought of assembling them in an unconventional way, but by making the string make a turn from the bottom,
so as to increase the pressure on the sleeve that weighs on the cone.
The result seems excellent to me, I hear even more the sound close to that of Chet's recordings.
The nylon strings give a "creaminess" a softness that contrasts with the twang of the high strings.
From today I will always mount the EJ33 ...

Carefully polishing an undamaged/undented aluminum cone, along with new strings, will bring the life back to a resonator stringed instrument. In some cases better than when the instrument was new, or after a cone replacement. Carefully sanding puc and biscuit contact surfaces down to bare wood/phoenolic with fine sandpaper also makes a big difference. Gumming of their finish after several years of body perpiration attacking it, can really dull the tone.

Grazie Mike.

the old (original) cone is slightly flattened compared to the new one.
Now, with this new cone, my resonator has more volume.

Hi Paolo,

How much did the new cone raise the action and alter the harmonics?

I can't say exactly, but now the strings don't fry anymore, the buzz is gone and the tuning seems to be maintained better. The intonation has not changed so much it was quite in tune even before.
For me now it is much better, I hate the buzz with all my heart, those noises of scrap metal.

You did keep the old cone? If it's not scratched or dented, it worth something to sombody needing one.

Obviously I kept the old cone, it is original and is part of the history of the instrument, it must be put on display with the instrument.
there is a peculiarity, in the old cone as well as in the various parts of my DV:
the same number is always stamped, in my case the number 5.
So to make you understand:
in the cap of the cone hole, inside the case, in bracing, in the cone etc ... number 5!!!
