I have a Yamaha AES1500B with Dimarzzio Q100 pickups with which I was never satisfied so I decided to replace them with Gibson P90.I'm interested in whether these dimensions are the same pickups and whether it is feasible so that you do not have to dig into the guitar.My brother has a one Gibson P100 pickup, which is deeper in size than the Dimarzzio Q100 and the pickup does not match in size or by characteristics.P100 for the rehearsal I managed to somehow put the Yamaha only when I raised the strings so high that the guitar I can not play.I must admit that Gibson P100 has a little warmer sound, but not worth the effort and cost.

You might want to browse around in the tvjones.com site. He makes P-90 replicas and has a solid reputation in the pickup making field.

It's really hard to come up with a definitive answer to your question. I did a search for your guitar and it looks like a nice Yamaha clone of a 6120 but it is impossible to tell whether a P-90 will just drop on there or need some work to make it fit. That's another reason visiting the jones website might help. They might have a direct answer for the physical attachment part if you e.mail or call.

Pull your pickups and measure the dimensions so you have something specific to refer to. Impossible to judge tolerances by way of a website picture..

As for having it sound like Danny Gatton's clip... it will probably sound simiar but the guitars are not the same and that does make a difference. Also the amp you use (and the volume level) will be different so unless you can find someone who has already done that modification to the identical guitar you have using the pickups you want to use you're going to have to decide whether you want to be the one to chance it.

The other factor, of course, is that you can play a 'Mystery Train' on a guitar and pass that same guitar to Danny Gatton and you would not reckognize the guitar. The player has a tremendous affect on the final tone of the guitar.

I'd say go for it but I was always adventurous about this kind of thing and 'digging into a guitar" never slowed me down.

Do your homework, measure twice, cut once...

Danny is a single and unique, and too much effort should be made to be his good copy.I listed him as an example because it plays Gibson ES350 which Yamaha AES1500B copy of a sound that I want to get would be most similar to the one that has Scotty Moore of the album Sun Session.The reason why I do not want to go in the direction of Gretsch is that two years ago I bought a G5120 with which I am fully satisfied, at first I thought about replacing the pickups and tuner but I quickly gave up on it because I have no complaints about either the tone or the tuner though I often use
tremolo.Amplifier that is currently using the Vox AC30H2 that I use are Boss FBM-1 and Zoom 508 Delay with Charlie Hall patches because our repertoire consists mostly of The Shadows tunes, but we play surf guitar and other standards as well as some fingerpicking standards and we have occasional vocals with which we perform rockabilly standards.I've definitely decided to buy a P90 pickups and as soon as I find out their dimensions, if it is feasible I will do it.When I do that I will report here on the forum that have passed and they can set up some footage on youtube if anyone is interested to hear how the guitar sounds after replacing the pickups.

Wasn't trying to be negative referring to the contrast made between two different people playing the same guitar.

Should give you some idea of what you're looking at for cavity requirements.

p.s.: P-90's I'm sure you know, will have a bit of hum to them. Not a lot but they aren't double coil pickups.

Now I'm measured Q100 pickup and P90 a little less,they just need to buy and install in the guitar.

To write a report ..... yesterday I got two new Gibson P90 pickups, and today I put them on the Yamaha AES1500B followed by great disappointment.The tone has changed imperceptibly, so little that it is not worth the effort or cost.What I do is that I will return to Dimarzzio Q100 Yamaha AES 1500B and give in and sell ads.
After that, I'll look on ebay Epiphone ES 295 with which I will be more pleased.
There is an adage that says "I'm not rich enough to buy cheap stuff" but in this case will prove to be incorrect, I hope not, but I'm sure of that.
