The Chetboard

I played through a 25L15 clone this past Friday night, and I can't stand it any longer. I have to have one. Sooooooooooo, I am offering for sale my Fender Twin Custom 15 and my Rivera Sedona 55 Combo. The Twin to me looks as good as it did the day I brought it home. I don't know of a ding or blemish anywhere. There has never been an issue with this amp. It is the best amp I have ever owned. It has been played only in my church and my studio. Mostly at church. I leave it there all the time. The casters have never been installed. The cable for the foot pedal still has the plastic ties around it. The paper/cardboard thing on top that describes everything is even still on it. It would pass for new. If there is any kind of problem with it at all, I don't know about it.

Trying to be as honest as I know how to be, I must tell you that I have never been happy with the Sedona. It is a great amp, but it is just not my cup of tea. Most would know about this amp, I guess, but briefly, it is an acoustic/electric amp, all tube, hand wired, 12" JBL and tweeter. It has supposedly the best spring reverb you can buy, but I never use it. I use my Lexicon instead. There is a small snag, just bigger than a bee bee, on the lower left. Not very noticeable. In fact, you have to look for it. I never use channel 1, which is supposed to be the electric side. But, the other day I switched it on to channel one and there was a noticeable hum. I don't know what it is. I doubt that it is anything serious. I have always used channel 2 for acoustic and electric both, that's why I didn't know about it.

The Twin has the standard Fender cover. The Sedona has a custom made cover by Le Cover that I had made. I bought both of these amps new and neither of them has ever been in a smokey environment or been abused in any way.

Ebay will probably see these by this weekend if there are no takers here. I am asking as is $1000 for the Twin and $1500 for the Sedona.

A few questions regarding the Rivera...

What year is it?

Does the hum in channel one change, depending on the type of guitar plugged in? Which type of cable you use?
Does it occur regardless of which outlet in the house you use?
Does it occur with an AC power conditioner?

I am interested but would like to get to the bottom of the hum issue. Rivera website states...

"Costly regulated DC filament power supply for the Preamp Tubes allow silent and hum free operation."

...and there is not a known history of this being a problem.

My suspicion is that it is tube, or tube seating, problem which is easily fixed.

Hi Randy. I will verify what year my amp is. I am pretty sure I bought it in 2004, but I will check to see for sure. On the hum issue, I just noticed it the other day. I never use channel 1, but for some reason I switched over there and noticed it. I don't think it is anything serious, but I'll try to get someone to check it out for me. I'll try the easy checks first. The nearest reputable amp guy is almost 100 miles away in Norman. I am very particular about that.

When I get home tonight, I will get the serial number and do some checks that my simple mind will allow me to. I will also take some pics tomorrow when the light is better and post them.

This might be old information, but the DIYAudio forum has quite an interesting (and very long) thread about Standel amps. Lots of history, Schematics, pics etc. The this thread has been dead for some time, but the information is timeless. Very interesting story about Bob Crooks on about the 3rd page of the posts. There are also some nice pictures of the first Standel amp and some shots of the shop, but they are quite far into the thread. Oh, you need to register to see the pictures, but its pretty painless.

For those who might be interested in another's opinion on these two amps:

I had one of those Fender Custom Twin 15 amps for a while. That amp sounds absolutley stunning with big archtops like L5's. Even better if it has single-coil pickups.

I also have a Sedona. It sounds fabulous with thin-line archtops that have humbuckers, especially alnico humbuckers like you find in the Gibson Chet series and the Epiphone Elitist Gent. Compared to the "sweet spot" on the Sedona--which can take a little patient tweaking to find--the only amp I have heard that is better is a 25L15 or exact clone.

P.S. I do not have a nylon string electric, so I can't comment on these amps for that kind of pickup. I think Doyle Dykes sounds pretty good on the Sedona with his nylon, though . . . .

I see a Fender Twin Custom 15 sold on Ebay for $1700.00. A couple of months or so ago, a Standel Clone was for sale for around that amount to start. I don't remember if it sold.

If the standel amp clone is the Invicta cascade,dont waste your time or money. Its no way even close to a standel amp in any shape or form. The musicman rd-50 smokes it. The invicta is someones opinion of a standel amp that apparently hasn't heard one before.
