Looks like they borrowed from the Monkees '67 Gretsch. The double Thumbprint inlays must be expensive.

I would not pay that. But the Super 4000 that Gibson made was overpriced too. Good instrument just was over priced.

Yeah, I neither like the color nor the "F"-holes

To the best of my knowledge there never has been a model 6120 with cat´s eyes soundholes, only with true F-holes. There was, however, a Model 6117 Cat´s Eye Electric inspired by the old Synchromatic models. It was produced during the years 1964-67. It didn´t have the two switches on the upper bout and not the Bigsby, so the one in question must be a cross-breed of the three, the 6117, 6120 and the Monkees model. There also was a one of a kind guitar called the Silver Hawk model, with double cutaway and silver sparkle top. But this one is a Custom Shop piece, so maybe a customer wanted it like that for some weird reason. A one of a kind thing certainly. All this information is from Jay Scott´s "The Guitars of the Fred Gretsch Company".

Guitar companies make these things hoping collector/investors will buy them I think.

Chet's last contribution on the 6100 series was the 6122 finalized in 1959. After that Jimmie Webster fooled around with modifications without consulting Chet He didn't like the double cut and the mutes but George Harrison caused a huge spike in sales

He ddn't much like the idea of the mods but since he got paid for endorsement he just kept going to the bank.

I'm sure the same thing would apply here.
