storing vinyl albums question

Postby rhirvine » Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:08 am

I have a collection of old albums that I don't play anymore since I've been buying and playing CD's. My collection would be about 1 1/2 feet high if I stacked them vertically. It is mostly Chet Atkins by the way. What kind of container and method is best. At this time I have them all upright in a shelf. Thanks.

I got this info from Wikepedia.
Ray

Store exactly vertically to prevent warping. Spacers are recommended for every four to six inches.
Store LPs with other LPs. Avoid mixing with other sizes such as 10″ and 7″ discs. Never use bookends.
Store on metal shelves (as opposed to wood, which expands and contracts).
Do not allow LPs to hang over the edge of shelves.
Remove shrink wrap from dust jackets immediately after acquiring.
Use polyethylene inner sleeves. Never use PVC sleeves as their chemical makeup is too close to vinyl and may cause imprints or fuse to the LP.[12] Replace paper sleeves as paper deteriorates, leaving oil and paper residue.
Store in-use LPs at a temperature of 65 to 70 °F (18 to 21 °C). Those in long-term storage should be kept at 45 to 50 °F (7 to 10 °C). Though relative humidity (RH) is considered less an issue for vinyl than other recorded media,[13] it is recommended that LPs be stored at 45 to 50% RH.

Wow! I guess I'd better go and check the few LPs that I have and make sure that they are okay on the shelf where I put them.

Several years ago I went to the record shops in atlanta and noticed the album containers that they used and asked where I might purchase them. After some research I found the crates at the Container Store. The Supreme Crate is made for albums and you can also buy the thick mil plastic sleeves to protect your albums.

And pick a few to do this with....

The glass on these things is not high quality UV resistant so you're probably best keeping this on a wall away from the window. I'm in the process of covering all walls in my instrument closet with Chet albums done this way.
