Getting that 'Sound'

Postby amdyck » Sun Apr 08, 2012 7:29 pm

Hello, folks
I apologize for being so persistent on this topic, but I just gotta find a solution.
In this version of Chet's "Laredo" Jean Francois uses recording equipment that I assume must be used with a sound card and hence a computer. Does anybody out there know of the right classic guitar and pickup that I can use to get a sound something 'like' this ( without needing a PC !) . I Have a Kustom Tube 12 practice amp and have ordered a Danelectro spring reverb that might help a bit. I don't play Streets of Laredo but I can play Vincent and Siboney which are amplified in the same way . It would make playing these tunes a lot more fun I think. - Alan

Hi,

I will try my best to help you on this one (my english is not top notch ;) )
obviously to get this sound and reproduce it live, is something I beleive that would be hard to do
because there is a lot of physical aspect to consider ex: size of the scene, microphone type, amplification, effects etc...

The thing we can do is to start with what I used in this perticular recording: Classical Takamine Acoustic, USB Samson C01U, compressor and reverb.

So I would personnaly not use an electric classical model, but mostly a standard acoustic because they have, I beleive
more natural harmonics. Secondly I would try a high quality condensor microphone clip insert in the guitar hole and would go throught a compressor.

I use a modify Boss CS-3 (Monte Allum) live and have a great result with all the instruments that I use,
this modified compressor uses an optical diod and hi-fi audio capacitor it keep's the original source intact but make all the guitars that I play with, a lively pure sound.

I would choose a great acoustic amp with reverb but the reverb can ''screw'' everything up! You know reverb
can be the hall too... or, if you use it then be careful on it.

Best Regards and Happy Easter! :D

Merci monsieur,

I have not much time so will write in English.

Who makes good contact clip-on microphones? I have a pedal with both compressor and reverb. Is that sufficient?

Meilleurs souhaits,

Alan

Here's an example of one type if microphone that would work because it have a preamp on it.
Audio-Technica PRO 70 Cardioid Condenser Lavalier

for me it is hard to tell because it is something that I would need to test
but I'm pretty sure that you would get something good out of this

One thing that can be an issue of is the sound level because it is not a pickup but a microphone
if you like your guitar loud then you can have problem with feedback.

I hope that will help
Take care :)

Merci, Jean

I will take a look at this microphone. J'aime jouer "Siboney" et "Vincent", (both tunes are 'doctored' to sound like 'Streets of Laredo') - "tres interesant !" I want to be able to get this sound using a mic and amplifier.

Alan -
I've had good luck with this contact microphone - the Schertler DYN-G - very good natural response for acoustic nylon or steel string :
