One of the YouTube clips shows Chet's Standel. Anyone know which one it was?

There are several. Off the top of my head, "Frankie and Johnny" shows the Standel pretty good, if I remember right. He used it on several of those songs from that dvd they put out Webb Peirce/Chet Atkins. They are good quality color videos.

What's "The Project"?

I just got out my Webb Pierce and Chet Atkins DVD by Shanachie and went through it. They are all on YouTube, but I recomend the DVD for better quality and you can find it at a good price online.

You can catch a glimpse of Chet's Standel in the Dark Eyes clip. Chet's using his Black sealed top 6120 on that one. You can see the Standel between 1:42-1:47. Here it is:

Most of you have seen me post Paul Yandell quotes from time to time.

The Project is this. I'm shaping my "Archive" into something like a biography of Paul Yandell. In so doing it is also a chornicle of the Sideman... the faceless musicians who work for love and usually little money to make the music most of us grew up on. Paul was one of the lucky ones who eventually made a decent living (thanks to working with Chet and Jerry Reed) after a long hard slog at it.

The Archive is an extremely detailed look at guitaring as Paul saw it as he worked with those two giants taken as posts here on the Chetboard and written up much like the quotiing posts I've made in the past. I at least want to make it so it can be in Marie and Micah's posession.

I really would like to see the finished product made available to students and people like us who are interested in the industry as it was from the late thirties to the present day. That, I don't know about. I'll eventually have to contact the Atkins Estate to get permission to release the data publicly. That part of "authoring" I'mn unfamiliar with.

I have asked before and I'll ask again...

If you have any good Paul or Chet stories, or possibly even some musical "war stories" you think might be suitable for inclusion, please send them in. It's a little tricky to explain... I'm not looking for "Paul was a good, kind, guy." We know that. What I need are little stories that show and describe what he was like as a person. Advice he gave, funny or philisophical things he may have said.

What I do with what I get is this....

I take the anecote, maybe rewite it a little, and send it back to the person who wrote it to me to see if they approve of my edit. As much as I can I try to keep the contributor's writing style intact. They have the option of being directly quoted or not credited... left as an anonymous contributor. I intend to keep an alphabetical list of contributors at the end of the thing.

I've put in a lot of work on this thing. Marie, Paul's brother Forrest and Micah have all been helping me. I know it would be a niche writing but those who like guitaring will find it immenesly informative.

That sounds great Norm! I sure would be interested. I have some info from emails that I asked him questions that other guitarist might be interested in. Of course he gave me some good advise. I just looked through some of my old emails, I have some info that you can maybe use. I'll have to spend some time with it and email the things I think you can use. It may take me a little while, not that I have a whole lot, but I'll just have to sort through it.

Sounds like a great project Norm ! I will definately be interested in reading it when done.

I gotta say it's fascinating stuff.


I started out this morning intending to do a little moving around of my text and six hours later I have a neckache from giving all this stuff continuity and rediscovering some of the things I forgot I had.

One story.

A few years back at CAAS. I had changed the strings on my Sand guitar and
didn't have anything to clip off the ends so I kind of wrapped them into loops at the
headstock like a lot of people do.

I stopped by Paul's table and he wanted to use my guitar to show someone a lick.
Of course I was honored. By this time the strings had come out of the loops and were going in all
directions.

Paul looked up at me and said " you know people do cut those off".

I can hear him saying that to this day. I laugh and am sad at the same time telling this story.
What a sense of humor!
