I have been listening to Paul Yandell's cds and Chets with the both playing the Gibson Country Gent guitars, which still sound very good to me,not better or worse than the gretsch just different. I have both Gibson and Gretsch and love them both, but was there ever a red country gent made of the same color as Chets. I have the orange and wine red which we all see but Chets didnt look like the wine red ones that everyone has,his looked more red,or not as dark.

I don't believe Gibson ever called it anything but wine red, but I have seen all shades of it though from a nearly dark maroon to the brighter red like Chet's. I've owned three of them - one was real dark, the other two were lighter with more grain showing through.
p.s. I agree with you that the Gibson CG is a great sounding guitar (in any color).

I had one of the early wine red ones I believe it was an 86 or 87 custom shop edition. I never liked the wine red color, it was almost black. I later sold it and bought one of the Orange ones in 93 or 94. I still have it and love that guitar. It's a better guitar in my opinion than the earlier ones. Nicer color, lighter, switches and knobs arranged better, and thumbnail markers, although I really liked those red markers on the earlier one. I have seen red ones like Chet's over the years on ebay. Some have been just like the one Chet is holding in that picture. They are out there, you just have to keep your eyes open. Al

I also have the Gibson Country Gent. It's the Same color orange as the Chet and Mark knopfler used, but when photographed it looks to be red, so in different lighting it may just look red.
