The Chetboard

I am looking for a little information on the new Gretsch Duane Eddy G6120DE. I have looked on the Gretsch at both it and the Chet Atkins G6120DSW. Both have they dynasonic pickups but the Eddy model is 1000 more than the Chet model.

One difference I noted is that the Chet model is described as having a body of laminated maple where the Duane model has a body of 3ply maple. Is laminated and 3 ply the same thing.

Bill, I have one of the new DE's ordered. Should be here by the end of the week. Actually the DSV is closer to the DE than the DSW is. There are some subtle differences and I don't know if I can explain it very well or not, but the DE is about 1/8" deeper and the binding is a little different as well as the color which is unique to the DE. I think the pickups are a little different also as well as the neck profile and taper. The DE has an aluminum Tru Arc bridge. The Bigsby handle is also a little different. When it comes right down to it, there probably won't be $1000 difference in the actual price you pay. More like $300 or so, depending on the dealer. I think it is worth that much difference myself.

Don't hold me to that because I am not a technical expert. I have played Duane's personal prototype and I have heard him play it up close and personal. It is a great guitar. You would be welcome to play mine if we ever get together sometime.

Yes, Bill, "laminated" and "ply" mean the same thing in this context.

It may seem strange but all of these new models that keep coming out don't entice me. When I'm able to I
want nothing but the Gretsch 6122-1959, primarily because of the neck width. I've played them and I love them.

I know nothing about Gretsch Guitars but, the first thing that came to my mind when reading your post is that not all laminates are equal.

Gretsch may be using the term "Laminated Maple" to indicate a Maple veneer over some other kind of wood (or woods, depending on the ply), and the term "3-ply Maple" to indicate that all three plys are, in fact Maple - which would add to the cost.

You should ask them.

Good catch, Randy! I believe you may be right about Gretsch's use of the terms. Your suggestion to ask the manufacturer is good advice. Some of the original "vintage" Gretsch models were apparently made of 2 laminae of maple over a core of cross-grain poplar, or similar wood.
