Baldwin 801CP

Hi Chuck, I've posted on some boards about the guitar. The seller stumbled upon one and contacted me if I was interested in buying a like new Baldwin 801CP guitar... Well that's about it Chuck .

I have what I believe is a Baldwin classic guitar. It has a Baldwin Prismatone pickup. I got it as a gift in 1969 or 1970. I have no paper work for it. It has "Made in USA 3 1073" on the back of the head stock and "F-70-??" on the inside. There is no sticker as pictured on this thread but the guitar looks exactly like the 801-CP pictured. I would appreciate any info regarding this guitar. It is in excellent shape and has been played very little.

The Baldwin guitar was not actually made by Baldwin, it was most likely built by Harmony. But there were many guitars that "look exactly like the Baldwin." The Harmony H-174 is identical, as is the Regal R220 (sold by Fender). I've even seen a few Silvertone models that are identical, suggesting a common manufacturer. But only the Baldwin 801CP had the Prismatone pickup in it, so if yours has the pickup it probably is a Baldwin. I think the later models (1970's) had a serial number stamped on the back of the headstock.

Lately I've played the Baldwin amplified and it's fantastic. I was wondering if anyone has some tips getting closer to the Reed/Nelson sound. Like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZaZqx9v3dU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6gPHpl7sjs.

I play through a Roland Cube 30 and a AER Compact 60, but I prefer the Roland above the AER.

Jerry used a MXR Dyna Comp. Does this improve the sound?

Anyone have some ideas?

Hendrik, The way I get Reed's and Willie's sound is turning the mid up about 8 and the bass about 1/2 way on the amp.
I think the Primatone sounds best plugged into a Phil Jones Cub amp.

Phil, your "Primatone" may sound best through a Phil Jones Cub, but my "Prismatone" can't be beat through
a Roland AC60.... Regards, Bill

I've tried one of those Roland amps, they sound really nice. I wasn't able to plug the Baldwin in it though. I believe the guitar I plugged into one was a Breedlove. The only amp I have is a Fender Acousticasonic. With that 22.5v battery box powering that Prismatone, I can only turn it up at about 1 1/2 or 2. I love the Prismatone because it's a very loud, powerful pickup.
My uncle gave me an old 70's Ovation classical electric about 10 years ago (the one with the Gibson style pickup), and that pickup sounded really good. But, the only problem with those guitars is they feedback really bad. I sold it a couple of years ago. I wish I would have kept it and slapped one of Sam's Prismatones on it.
I use to have so many guitars and amps, but eventually you gotta weed em' out especially when you start a family and have kids. One piece I regret selling is my old Standel amp with the JBL D-130 speaker.

I had one of those, too, the big one. They sound great, but I wanted a bit more portability and there's so many good choices for small acoustic amps these days that I downsized to the Roland last year. No regrets, since I also still have a bigger tube amp for that "bigger tube" sound...

I was told mine was a '67 model also.....and it has serial number 5102. I have a pre-amp, but no battery box...it sounds fine plugged into my Baldwin C-1 amp though....but I've really got to turn it up. I need me a dang battery box. I've tried playing thru other amps and it has no sound at all...no matter how loud the volume is...but it will play thru the Baldwin amp.
