I just read the news myself. I really enjoyed Dave Brubecks music. Chet had a great version of Take Five which I like very much and Steven King has a great version of Blue Rondo ala Turk. I am posting some links to their Youtube versions.

Got to hear Dave's son, Chris Brubeck and his trio, a couple of years ago. I was really impressed at how talented he is, and he talked about his dad still playing on a rare occasion. Like Norm said, Dave Brubeck got some folks listening to jazz, and he did it in a creative way with the time signatures that he used.
RIP Dave Brubeck.

I only saw Dave Brubeck perform 'live' twice, first in 1966 when "Take Five" was on the jazz and pop charts. He performed for the enlisted men at Ft. Sill, OK where I was stationed. A fellow soldier from Chicago talked me into going and we liked it so much we stayed for the second show. Joe Morello was on drums, Dave on piano, Paul Desmond on sax, and I don't recall the bass player's name.
The second time was a few years ago when he performed at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC with fingerstyle jazz guitarist Gene Bertoncini.
Tommy Jones and Chet's versions of "Take Five" are among my favorites along with Dave's.
I recall that as a teenager Dave was a temporary cowboy on his father's cattle ranch, while being tutored in music by his mother. He went to college to become a vet but changed his major to music.
