That role as Fatso is the one I think of whenever I think of Ernie. He used to live in the retirement community I lived in in AZ for a while. Just a real nice guy.

I can still hear Merle Travis playing "reinlistment blues ".

I wasn't even aware of him prior to "McHale's Navy", which was in the early 60's. I remember a news clip showing him in later years driving a motor home all over the country and stopping into small roadside cafes and mingling with everyone as he surprised them. I'll also never forget his role in "The Poseidon Adventure" in the early 70's with Leslie Nielson, Gene Hackman, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Roddie McDowell, etc.

It's interesting that I'm finding this type of news more often here on the ChetBoard than I am in more "traditional" ways.
