I can almost agree with what Phil Hunt is saying about being a full time musician and having any kind of life at all. I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was a kid, but I became a guitar player instead. 10 years ago, I got my vets license. I only use my license for my own animals. I have been a full time musician for 55 years. I do 500+ dates a year. I have 2 farms that I put time on. I raise black cats (9 in the house and about 50 outside) and 6 black German Shepherds. The question that I keep asking myself is, "How the hell did I ever get into this mess"?

Wow Joe, 500+ dates a year?? How is that even possible? 365 days per year, I can't imagine how you would have time for anything! You got to explain this to me. I love the cats and the Ger. Shepherds, that's right up my alley!

First of all, let me say that I applaud Phil Hunt in choosing his kids and family instead of the glamorous show business life. There is not a whole lot of glamour to show business, it is a business and when you step out of that business end of things, you get eatin up by the people that run it. You'll find out that your family is much more glamorous than what you would have achieved on stage. We entertainers do not get paid for entertaining, we get paid for driving and bookkeeping. The only glamour might be when you are performing and when you are done, you are no better off than the people that come to see you. I had a woman pianist tell me that all we are, are musical prostitutes. Roger asked how I can do 500+ dates in a year of only 365 days. I work only for corporations. My shows are one hour long. I can do 1-4 shows in one day, if they are in the same building or area. I have a daughter who runs a casino in Vegas and she books me into corporate shows out there. I'm not sorry that I ever got in this business. I worked with a lot of good people. I worked with Pete Drake, the guy who did the talking steel guitar. I worked with Thomas Wayne Perkins, who was the brother of Johhny Cash's original guitarist Luther Perkins. Thomas was the most honest man in Nashville that I ever knew. He committed suicide because of the music business and various other things.I worked with a lot of great people in the music business and if I could go back and do it all over again, I would choose my secondary profession, a veterinarian. There is no greater profession than working with helpless animals that have no voice to tell you what is wrong with them. Phil, my man, you put your children and your family first and you won't be sorry. Get them a cat or dog to love. You won't be sorry. God Bless.

Let me add one other thing. Roy Clark once told me that his life was programmed for him 6 months in advance. When you are in show business, you basically have no life of your own. I was always told that the best musicians are the ones sitting on their back porch playing. They want nothing to do with the music business.
