Did Chet ever visit this webboard?

As far as i recall - the webboard was going for 2-3years prior
to Chets demise in 2001. I am just curious if he was ever known
to visit it? It definitely would have cheered him up when he was ill
as everyone was so complimentary about his work.

It would appear no...

From my archive

Chet didn't have a computer. He didn't want to waste his time fooling with one. His office computer for his secretary was a small Apple with a small screen. He didn't use a computer himself but he had some kind of word processor machine that he wrote letters on.Paul Yandell cgp

Continuing proof how wise Chet was. He saw it for what it could be... a time waster.

You nailed it Norm. These things are better at wasting time than TV sets.

I like your detailed response, sycnchro

The web can be informative. It is killing libriaries in many ways and has renedred encylcopedias more or less extinct because such a broad range of information is just a click away.

But it is fraught with temptation to just fritter time away...

I see it in the same way that I see TV, useful but potentially a huge waste of time. When I first got out on my own I had a TV and would search for something to watch. Then the TV broke down and two weeks later my life was transformed. I currently have a TV set but no antenna, no cable or satellite; I watch DVDs or the occasional documentary on Netflix.

With computers and the Internet it's the same thing. you can waste a day without trying or use it as an informational tool. I carry an iPad for business reasons and get email on that. Except for the tasks I do for my job (IT Manager) I rarely touch a computer. I have a Mac Mini at home, mostly as a music source and the iPad for email and forum activity.

Ah, I see it as just the opposite! Sure, like anything, a computer can be abused and misused, ie: a waste of time, but in my opinion it is the greatest innovation in the history of mankind! Never before has information and knowledge been so quickly available, never have world wide communications (satellite technology, space exploration, medical imaging, instantanious visual technology (world-wide live television), and the list goes on and on!

A "waste of time"? On the contrary, computers can do in a MOMENT, what it would take a human to do in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and yes, even years...think Hubbell Telescope!

It all depends on one's perspective. I have heard some people say that playing a guitar was a "waste of time!" NOT!

I'm not quite sure why you are assuming I'm anti-computer. I work in IT, manage a pretty dense cluster of Cisco gear and both Microsoft and Apple PCs. I agree that it is a great innovation but my point is that endlessly playing on computers, be it web surfing or gaming is a big waste of time.

Sorry, "Synchro", but I did indeed get the impression you were rather "anti-computer", as your wording seemed to be primarily negative regarding them, and with little mention of the tremendous positive contributions that computer technology has given to the world. While I would agree with you that mindless web surfing, gaming, etc. is somewhat of a waste of time, the same could be said of many hobbies, pastimes, and yes, even some musical "endeavors", as I previously mentioned! :)

No harm, no foul, and I apologize for my misconception of your posting.

I agree that almost any leisure activity can be thought of as a waste of time and I suppose that playing guitar would fit in, at least in the minds of some. The difference, as I see it, is that playing guitar builds a number of skills both mental and manual. There's no question in my mind that playing music for 46 years has been quite complimentary to my career in technical fields. I realize that gaming can build coordination, etc, but I would opine that music skills are more focused and transferable.

Believe me, I've spent many an hour vegged out in front of a computer screen bored to death while I surfed with no particular goal. IMHO it was pretty much wasted time. I'm still connected 24 x7 with the iPad but most of the time it's cover is closed and I'm doing something else.

Yep, I concur, but I shudder to think of just how unaware of what's going on around me I'd be, without the computer, and my big screen TV, with it's "Fair and Balanced Reporting!"
