I've recently discovered this recording of Chet and Lenny Breau. The quality of the playing is heavenly. But so is the quality of the recording. This may be the most beautifully recorded guitar album I have ever heard. I would love to find out any information about the recording equipment and techniques used for this recording, if that information is available. Who was the recording engineer? What mics were used? What kind of reverb/delay was used and how was it added? How was it mixed? This is a truly remarkable recording, evidence of what may be a lost or fading art form...
Thanks!
Len

Hi Len R
Your right about everything you said about the album.
I listened to it just the other day.
John Knowles who reads and posts on this board may respond to your questions.
He was one of the artists on the album.

Oops!!
I'm sorry Len R
I'm getting old....I had it confused with The First Nashville Guitar Quartet.

Re: Standard Brands
Hey Ken! Yes, I was a bit surprised too about John being on that one. I'm glad you straightened that out. So now,
did you listen to "Standard Brands" the other day or "The Nashville String Quartet"?
My guess is that Paul Yandell may be able to answer the question about all of those details. I agree that "Standard Brands" was one of the best sounding recordings and I remember when it first came out, in about 1980 or so. Paul was already playing with Chet by then and seems to know a lot about Chet's projects that he wasn't personally involved with.
Lenny was too young to have left us only a few years after this and I wish he could have been around for another album with Chet.

Re: Standard Brands
In my opinion there are 3 albums that are sheer works of art....Me&Jerry, Me&Chet,...and Standard Brands. That album is a masterpiece. I made someone a copy of it to listen to and they were blown away.

I love all the duet albums. Just grabbed the double-play CD with Doc and Merle, that one's getting a lot of play around the house. But yeah, Standard Brands is amazing and effortless.

Re: Standard Brands recording location
Standard Brands was recorded in Chet's home studio. Most likely, standard analog, Neumann mics (small condensers) at arms length the way Chet liked it. These were the sessions where Lenny would disappear in between takes to take drugs hidden in Chet's garage.
Both the Reed duet albums were primarly recorded at Chet's place, as far as the overdubs....the tracks with the musicians were likely recorded at Studio B and or A. Chet and Jerry could then take their time and record at Chet's place at their leisure.
