Rarest Chet album? "My Brother Sings"

Postby Hendrik » Sat Nov 24, 2012 6:48 am

There is Chet LP on eBay from 1958 that I've never seen before; "My Brother Sings". This is of course with his brother Jim and it must be the rarest Chet album ever, even more scarce than the Sesac albums. There is so little information to find, but what I do know is that most of the songs on this albums are available on the 7 CD-box "Mr. Guitar - The Complete Recordings". Maybe it was a project aside "The Guitar Genius"? The current bid is $102,50 with still six days to go...

Tracklist
1. Swanee River
2. Country Style
3. Out of Nowhere
4. Stinky
5. Apple Blossom Time
6. Zing Went the String of My Heart
7. I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles
8. Asleep in the Deep
9. My Funny Valentine
10. When Day is Done
11. Even Tho'
12. I Know That You Know

The Guitar Genius album was on RCA Camden, but this one has the RCA Victor label on it. It's a new one for me.

Camden was to RCA like Epiphone was to Gibson I think. A bargain second line.

I know they reissued all of Chet's albums under camden. Had a lot of girly models on them and, truth be told, the second cover for this album (Guitar Genius _and guess who does the vocals) wasn't all that snappy.

New York tinkers with the Nashville office kind of thing I think.

From the booklet of the 7CDs Bear Family :

"Chef intended to feature Jim on a
full-blown RCA album titled 'My Brother
Sings/ mixing his own instrumentais with Jim's
vocals. It went as far as a color cover slick
with catalog number, reproduced hère.
For reasons not clear, someone - we'll never
know who - scuttled thé project. Five of Jim's
vocals wound up ignominiously filling half a
ten-cut RCA Camden budget LP 'The Guitar
Genius/ released under Chefs name in July,
1963.This material deserved better"

I spotted this on ebay today and just about fell out on the floor. I've seen the cover slick for this but NEVER...EVER... IN MY LIFE...HAVE I EVER SEEN THE ACTUAL LP!!! THIS MAY BE A ONE OF A KIND FOLKS!!!!
Has anyone informed General Gentry on this?? They should, he would want this sucker! Especially if it's "stone mint". I would want it also, but I know it's gonna go for alot...and I mean A-L-O-T!!$$$$
It wouldn't surprise me if it goes for $500-$1,000...or maybe more.

There was an Elvis Christmas LP awhile back on ebay (LOC-1035 1957) that was a "one-of-a-kind" and it was pressed on red vinyl. It was the only one known in existence that was custom made by a RCA Victor employee (all of the usual ones are pressed on black vinyl.) It was selling for $25,000. Eventually someone must have bought it cause I don't see it on there anymore. I wondered if someone from Graceland bought it.

I'm a record collector also and another record to be on the look out for also is Jim Reeves "Singing Down the Lane"...that's a hard one to find as well. Of course it was produced and circulated unlike the Chet and Jim Atkins Record.

Over the years I remember Chet mentioning having issues with RCA's New York headquarters. I have no doubt this album got screwed with by some suit in the Big Apple proving to The Board that he had no idea what he was doing tinkering with the Nashville office.

And Chet and Jim paid the price

I bought a lot of RCA Camden albums back then. They were a bit cheaper than ordinary LPs, but then only had 10 tracks, several of which were older recordings. I remember being somewhat disappointed then, but today I´m glad I bought them.
