Let's take it back even a bit further to the days when nearly every home that could afford one was likely to have a piano and the kids got lessons in classical piano. Harry Truman, for example, grew up in a tough neighborhood but was forced to practice daily, in spite of the ribbing he got from the other kids. It served him well, even as president of the US he was known to play at public functions in the White House.
The discipline of music is stimulating to the mind. It's good to work at something that takes time; especially so once you master it. The screeching so common at Guitar Center doesn't strike me as having the same degree of benefit.
Re: Meanwhile, over in Europe
Rande... I know you weren't trying to discredit great young players. I sure hope you can make it to CAAS this year to hear some of those fine young players.
Yes, times are changing synchro... I'm sure some of those screeching guitarists think "our music" is very UN-musical. My son has a saying... "same ole same ole" or something like that.. LOL

Ron, I know that you didn't think I was trying to discredit young players but I wasn't so sure about everyone else who follows the board. I just wanted to make sure that I was understood. That's a big problem in society.....being misunderstood, I mean.
Regarding attending the CAAS event, unfortunately I'm already scheduled to teach summer school beginning May 14 and I could never get those days off. As an adjunct, the pay is too little to be able to afford both a replacement and the trip there. I'm trying to make plans for 2013. Unfortunately I'll have to miss the Chet exhibit at the CMHOF, which I know will disappear by August or so.
My next "big" goal is to be able to record myself, at least audio, and post to this board. I've put in too many years and have come up with too many arrangements not to be able to share with people who would appreciate it. Away from the board, I'm not finding many eager listeners other than for other guitarists, unless I'm accompanying a vocalist like I'll be doing this coming Thursday night when I open up for Ronnie McDowell. I would also like to participate on the TFGA "Pickin' Room" like I did a few years ago when Len Collins was in charge. Then of course would be the next goal of recording video of myself and posting on YouTube and also posting to this board. With all the time I spend putting arrangements together for churches, weddings, etc. it would nice for "more friendly ears" to hear some of it. Then I would "actually" feel connected to this board beyond the mere posting of text.
